How to read your electricity bill

Where to find the reference number, the due date, the units and the charges that change every month.

Updated

Reference or account number

PITC-billed companies (LESCO, IESCO, FESCO, GEPCO, MEPCO, PESCO, TESCO, HESCO, SEPCO, QESCO) print a 14-digit reference number near the top. K-Electric prints an account number; SNGPL a consumer ID; SSGC a customer number.

Due date and after-due amount

Two amounts are printed: payable within due date, and payable after due date. The difference is the late payment surcharge.

Units and history

Units consumed are the difference between the present and previous meter readings. A history table shows the last twelve months, which also tells you whether you are a protected consumer.

Charges that change monthly

  • Fuel price adjustment (FPA): a per-unit charge or credit for a past month’s fuel cost.
  • Quarterly adjustments: set by the regulator and spread over a few months.
  • Taxes: general sales tax, electricity duty and, where it applies, a TV fee.
