Under net metering, units you export offset units you import, one for one. Under net billing, imports are charged at the normal tariff and exports are paid at a lower buyback rate.
Amendments reported in February 2026 moved new solar contracts to net billing with a buyback rate around half the earlier figure; existing contracts were reported to continue on their terms. Confirm the rate in your own agreement.
What it means
- Self-use matters more: run daytime loads while the sun is up.
- Oversizing pays less than before.
- Payback is longer for new contracts; Bill Ghar’s solar estimator shows both modes side by side.
