Protected consumers and the 200-unit line

A protected domestic consumer pays much lower rates. One month above 200 units ends that for the next six months.

Updated

Electricity companies class a domestic connection as protected when it used 200 units or less in each of the last six months. Protected consumers are billed on lower slab rates.

What happens at 201 units

If a protected consumer uses more than 200 units in a month, that bill is charged at the unprotected rates, and the connection is treated as unprotected for the following six months. That single extra unit can add thousands of rupees.

How to stay under

  • Read your meter mid-month and project the month’s total.
  • Remember the billing month runs between reading dates, not calendar dates.
  • Shift heavy loads (iron, washing machine, motor) to months with headroom.

Check where you stand

Your last six months’ units are printed in the history table on your bill. If all six are 200 or less, you are protected. Use the Bill Ghar calculator to see what the next unit costs.
